O.M.G. - impressions over The Raid...

My stomach is still turning and vibrating from the enourmous amount of raw power and sheer ingeniuty spread over 100 minutes in what appears to be one of the best martial arts movie in the last 10 years - a collaboration between realtively uknown players on the block, it delivers kicks and punches which was sending me through martial arts bliss, and this is not happening everyday. 

After rather interesting excercise in Merantau Iko/Gareth are teaming up to create brutal and adrenaline pumping feature named simple The Raid (The Raid: Redemption for the American market), and many of you may already seen trailers and part of movie in previous article, published not so long ago. 

Let me start with a personal note - The Raid is one of the finest examples I've ever seen to this date and I'm looking forward to the Hong Kong/China/Thailand answer. It won't be easy to surpass its fluidity, charisma and last but not least almost perfect martial arts sequences, choreographed with exquisite touch towards details and fast paced takes, combined with execution seldom seen in recent years. After the initial hype and after few trailers I was waiting for it to emerge and I had to admit - the waiting is definitely worth it. 
The plot is quite simple - a police special task force unit is going on a mission to apprehend local drug lord, well guarded and hidden within 30 floors in a building full of bad people with killing skills. 20 determined people facing a certain death as they are diving head first into chaos and mayhem, and only goal is to survive at any cost. From start to finish is one bloody and raw ride, no matter it's within the walls of a building - tight shots, almost claustrophobic, wide angles, swinging camera movements and exquisite editing is one of the positive sides here. 

The Good

When you have to create something memorable on screen you just have to go the core of this genre, to the one pulsating and sparkling centre, where men shows what they are made of. And in such period that movies are now heavily relying on CGI and green screens, here only the blood effects were kinda artificial, all the rest is executed to a highest level. I wasn't paying so much attention to the fake blood, because I was mesmerised by the martial arts sequences, each crafted beautifully and actual improvements over the previous one. Iko shows remarkable skills and after seeing Pencak Silat for second time it is something which shouldn't be taken lightly by any opponents.

The Bad

 Gareth Evans really outdone himself here, after Merantau, and his performance as writer, director and editor is something amazing to watch, each scene was presented with such effort to get the viewer into the action, into the emotions of the main characters, into the pain and scent of hopelessnes. After the intial 10 minutes, when we are getting acquainted with the plot and who is the object of the raid itslef, through the exhausting scenes of murder and fight, up to the gripping end I saw the pure amount of sheer power, represented in a gruesome and grim way, but staying true to the core, and foundation of any classic martial arts movie from the early Shaw brothers features to the latest high-fly imagery. It has heart, it has lungs, imbued with vengeance and honor, with dignity and determination, with sweat and blood. 

The Building

The movie is brutal on many levels, so as any John Woo's exploits on gangsters tales, the movie is raw, like any of the Tony Jaa/Jeeja Yanin feature, the movie is straightforward as any example from the late 70's to the early 80's - it has good guys, bad guys, purpose and feeling. It doesn't need the latest flashy technology to show impact, it doesn't need complex plot and hundreds of characters to imply grand scale, it does not need a watered-down violence to appeal to wider audience, it needs only a proper appreciation of the fans throughout the world. It is a polished product, reflecting in different ways its vision, its presence, its craftsmanship - yes, I know I probably sound like a teenager after this first sex experience, but this movie delivers excitement by the second, thrills by the minute and martial arts choreogaphy which has to be seen... 

Getting a slice of something

Every punch or kick or grab is expressed through really long takes, no slow-motion and without the shaky cam experience or the annoying close ups, when you are struggling to see how the fighters are complimenting each other. Iko Uwais has put his name in martial arts movies history with this movie, and all the rest should look up to him now, as he showed how martial arts movies made a full circle and return to their source once again. If you still haven't notice, I'll say this once more - the movie is simply A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! In relation to the title here - I can add more abreviations, but lets not make it so complicated. After so many positive points, you are probably wondering has it some negative flavour - yes it has, I wish it could be longer in running time. But I hope that this would be improved in the next part (which i think has started filming), but then again, what else left there to be improved? Interesting times ahead I'd reckon...

I guess you've already figured out my final score and it could be no les than: 10/10 - for me it is one of the best and finest martial arts movie in the past 10 years...

The Grim Reaper


А сега към родната реч да се обърна - може би ми е малко трудно да пиша за такъв филм, нищо че от вчера вечерта го гледах два пъти и все така адреналиново ми действа. Очаквах го с огромно нетърпение, а след изгледаните задължителни материали като трейлъри и снимки плюс постери, апетитът ми за наистина здрав (може и корав) екшън се изостри неимоверно. Ако някой е гледал предния филм на дуото Ико Уваис/Гарет Евънс (Мерантау) и си мисли, че е видял всичко на което са способни тези двамата, е по-добре да погледне The Raid, за да получи едно съвсем различно усещане и емоция, въпреки откровенното насилие и прекалено брутални сцени, които се вписват в общото темпо на филма прекрасно. 

A bad day for any van...

Сюжетът е изтъркан отвсякъде, но пък в тези филми рядко ще видите дълбоки разсъждения и философски теми (има, но не представени по традиционния начин), многопластови герои и вербални еквилибристики - за това си има определени творци, известни с такива ленти. Тук получаваме сурово изживяване от висока степен, в някои отношения напомняше на оркестрираните стрелби във повечето филми на Джон У, в някои отношения представяше приказка за отмъщение, позната тема в ранните филми с бойни изкуства през 70-те и началото на 80-те, но във всяко едно отношение (според мен) е един малък шедьовър в жанра, който напоследък се пренасити с летящи клоуни и циркови номера, облечени в компютърни одежди.  В The Raid имаше толкова много сила събрана на квадратен сантиметър, колкото не бях виждал в над 90% от филмите в жанра за последните 10 години, а това казва много за качествата на самия филм. 

A good day for a hatchet...

Умелата игра на осветлението и минималното количество ефекти (забелязани най-вече сред кървавите добавки), както и прецизния монтаж и ъгли на камерата при всички бойни сцени, ми дадоха едно усещане за сурова ярост и стремеж за съвършенство, което бях забравил напоследък. Нямаше излишно разточителство на кадри, всяко едно действие на екрана беше отразено по възможно най-добрия начин и въпреки, че на моменти имаше и quick cuts, те бяха толкова плавно внедрени в общата картина, че изобщо на намали скоростта на екшън сцените, а ги подсили до ниво на pure awesomness. 

Pistol vs. knife - the outcome is...

Честно казано не мислех, че ще видя филм с бойни изкуства с такъв заряд и енергия, с толкова огромно сърце и с толкова големи топки (простете грубия ми изказ) - най-нагло хвърля ръкавицата към останалите играчи на сцената от Хонконг, Китай, Корея и Тайланд, че не може да бъде по-очевидно - да, Ong Bak, Tom Yum Goong, Chocolate също са сурови образци, със собствено излъчване и изразителност при бойните сцени, но тук нещата са полирани до съвършенство, всички елементи за един такъв филм са интегрирани по изключително плавен начин, с внимание към всеки детайл, с невероятно изпълнение и съдържащ в себе си пулсираща сърцевина на гняв, отчаяние и безпомощност, трансформирани в жива енергия от удари, хвърляния и шамари с крак, които ме държаха в увеличено количество на адреналина ми през цялото време. Всеки ъгъл, всеки поглед, всеки начин на неутрализиране на противниците беше като по учебник, такъв в който максимата "Свобода или Смърт" се прилагаше със забележителна успеваемост.

Fly away, but don't forget to land safely

 Самият Гарет Евънс освен режисьор, сценарист и editor, се изявява и в отдела за бойните сцени, заедно с Ико Уваис (Rama) у Янян Рухиан (Mad Dog), показва изключителна свобода на действие и умение да разкаже и най-кървавата история по зрелищен начин, който не отстъпва по нищо на големите образци от жанра и го прави с лекота и финес, реализиран от малцина преди него. Заснетите минималистични сцени извън битките, използват всеки сантиметър от площта на стаите, коридорите и други клаустрофобични помещения, предоставяйки на мен една особена съпричастност към всеки от героите, дори и за не толкова добрите. Въпреки, че следва познатата формула и се придържа към еталоните, маркирани от много други заглавия преди него, на финалния бой се бях напрегнал до степен да окуражавам добрите да прекъснат живителните връзки на противника си, който просто ги размазваше като валяк-гущер и почти ми идеше да крещя (нищо, че беше 2 сутринта) в подкрепа на Ико и компания. Явно имам още да раста на възприятия.

Но това не променя факта, че изгледах един от най-добрите филми на последните 10 години в жанра martial arts - какво ще ни донесе продължението, което вече се снима, на този етап не зная какво да кажа - още ме тресе еуфорията по оригинала. Оценката е ясна и от птичи поглед: 10/10 и само един негатив - жалко, че не беше малко по-дълъг.
